Rare Anti-Prohibition Poster Invoking Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln, Opponent of Prohibition

New York: Calvert Distillers Corp. [c.1940]. Color vignette of log cabin. Poster. Approximately 14" x 18" (framed dimensions 14 1/2" x 18 1/2"). Single sheet. Very good in a good frame. Simple wood frame has a few bits of wear and a 2 1/4" split area on right side.

A rare poster issued by the Calvert Distillers Corporation and in a campaign against anti-liquor forces following Prohibition. This apocryphal Lincoln quote had been used by the "Wets" in the original Prohibition fight. It was resurrected here for one of a series of posters Calvert Distillers produced to combat pockets of anti-liquor sentiment that were growing again by the late 1930s and early 1940s.

This is good propaganda, but the quote does not come from Mr. Lincoln. Furthermore, the cabin depicted is also now conclusively proved not to be his birthplace.
