The third and final autobiography by Frederick Douglass, The earlier books were published prior to the Civil War, when he still had to be careful about the information he included due to being a fugitive slave. This account of his life includes much more on his early life as a slave and his escape. Likewise, this is the only one of Douglass's autobiographies to cover the Civil War and its aftermath, including his relations with Presidents Lincoln and Garfield.

This is a second printing of the first edition, as identified in The Frederick Douglass Papers, Series 2, Vol. 3, Book 1.
