Yosemite (Pictorial Map)

[Carmel]: [Jo Mora Maps], 1931 [1941]. Colored map and caricatures. Single sheet. 19 3/4" x 16". Mounted on linen to 23 3/4" x 20" Fine. Free of noticeable wear. Colors remain bright and crisp.

This is the first colored printing of Mora's famous but scarce "carte" of Yosemite National Park, printed in 1941 (despite copyright date). The original version was uncolored and appeared in 1931. It was slightly larger and had other minor differences in content.

Mora himself colored and slightly updated the map in 1941. There have been later color printings, beginning in 1949, but with additional changes by a different artist (Mora having died in 1947). There is often confusion between this and the later colored versions, as the only date appearing on any of them is the original copyright date of 1931. Fortunately, there are a few key points that distinguish the 1941 map, as updated by Mora himself, from its later variants. We offer here the desirable 1941 printing.

Joseph Jacinto Mora was born in Uruguay and emigrated to the United States with his family when he was 4 years old. He became a talented artist in photography, painting, sculpture, illustration, and more. A true renaissance man. And this is a truly lovely copy of the earliest colored version of his witty and detailed map of Yosemite. Dedicated to the memory of his friend, Stephen T. Mather, first Director of the U.S. National Park Service.
