Address of Mr. S. Teackle Wallis, Chairman of the Committee, with the Reply of His Excellency, Governor Whyte, Delivered in the Senate Chamber, at Annapolis, at the Unveiling of the Statue of Chief Justice Taney, December 10th, 1872

Baltimore: John Murphy & Co., 1872. First edition. Wrappers. Octavo. 18 pages.

Severn Teackle Wallis presents background on the movement to honor Roger Brooke Taney with a monument, and the engagement of the distinguished Maryland sculptor, William H. Rinehart. The rest of Wallis's speech is a glowing memorial to Taney.

Wallis was among prominent Baltimore citizens locked up in Fort McHenry for over a year during the Civil War, over the strong objections of Justice Taney to Lincoln's administration.

This pamphlet has advertising for contemporary publications on inside and outside of rear cover, most of which are sympathetic to the Confederacy even in 1872.

This statue of Justice Taney came to viewed as controversial due to Taney's decision in the Dred Scott case. It was removed from the State House grounds at Annapolis in the early morning hours of August 18, 2017 and is currently in storage.

Very good. Bound in aqua-colored wraps printed in black, over a stitched binding. Small chip to lower fore corner tip of front cover, slight separation of covers at heel of spine.
