Beautiful Swimmers: Watermen, Crabs and the Chesapeake Bay

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, (1976). First printing. Drawings by Consuelo Hanks. Hardcover. Octavo. xiii, 304 pages. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Bound in cream colored paper over boards with green cloth spine, endpaper maps. Spine titled in silver foil. Touch of fading at head of spine. Jacket has two cleanly closed .75" tears--at top edge of front panel and along upper joint fold. Mild browning to jacket along top edges and spine.

Warner's landmark work on the Atlantic Blue Crab and its primary habitat, the Chesapeake Bay. This was Warner's first book and it won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1977.

This copy is inscribed and signed by Warner to fellow naturalist Shirley Ann Briggs, "To Shirley / with many thanks for her / patience, encouragements / and good advices. / -- Willy / Washington, D.C. / February, 1976"

Briggs was a naturalist and an artist who worked with Rachel Carson. Her bookplate is at top fore corner of front pastedown.

A very nice signed first edition of this increasingly difficult to find Pulitzer Winner.
