Herbarium and Plant Descriptions

Boston: Allyn and Bacon, 1895. Mounted pressed plants. Cloth folder with string ties. Tall octavo. 7 pages plus 50 plants mounted on folders. Very good. Outer folder is bound in drab green cloth over boards with lettering to front cover stamped in dark green. Three string ties through eyelets in upper board keep the contents inside. There is some minor extremity wear and a few light stains to exterior. Interior leaves have mild browning. The plants are generally well preserved though some show minor losses.

A collection of 50 pressed plants and flowers, complete with index and brief individual descriptions. This herbarium was gathered and mounted in 1920-1921 by a young woman of 15 named Mildred Hohl. Mildred's name is on a partial label on front cover of the folder. She apparently gathered the plants in areas around her home town of Greenville, Pennsylvania based on information in her handwritten descriptive notes accompanying each specimen.

This specimen kit has a 7 page pamphlet of instructions on its use at front, which also includes Mildred's handwritten index of the 50 specimens she collected. This is followed by the specimens, each mounted on a sheet that folds over to protect it, with descriptive information on the cover leaf. Mildred's descriptive notes are brief and generally limited to the specimen's family, scientific and common names, date it was collected, locality, and type of soil.
