The Crutch, July 9, 1864. Vol. 1, No. 27

Annapolis: U.S.A. General Hospital, Division No. 1, 1864. Woodcut masthead. Single sheet, folded once. Very good. Was folded in quarters at some point. A few tears along old folds repaired with tape.

An original issue of the weekly news and literary paper published for Union soldiers at U.S.A. General Hospital, Division 1 during the Civil War. The hospital occupied part of the ground of the U.S. Naval Academy, that institution having temporarily relocated to Newport, RI.

The Crutch was published from the beginning of 1864 through the end of the Civil War. Each issue contains items of news, literary pieces, brief anecdotes, etc. There are also many fascinating advertisements for services available to soldiers in Annapolis.

This issue's "Weekly Review" of news talks about the recent July 4 celebrations, mentioning flags flying from the Statehouse and Governor's mansion and shipping in the harbor. There is mention of African-American residents promenading the streets of town in their finest "store clothes."
