Remember...Uncle Tom Says- "Only You Can Prevent Ghetto Fires"

Los Angeles: Sawyer Press, 1967. Color cartoon. Poster. 22 1/2" x 33 1/8" Near fine. There is a strip of tape diagonally across each of the top two corners. Some scattered minor wrinkling. Image and printing bright and strong.

Ron Cobb began freelancing as a cartoonist for the radical Los Angeles Free Press in 1965, and was regarded as one of the finest political cartoonists of the mid-1960s to early 1970s.

This poster was done in the era of 1960s civil unrest in many cities, particularly in African American neighborhoods. It graphically captures the sentiment, held by many young Black activists, that elderly neighbors who sought to moderate their sometimes destructive and violent methods were "Uncle Toms."
