Holographic Letter from Emerson

Emerson's Works, with a holographic letter signed by Emerson tipped into Essays: First Series

Concord / Boston: Private letter / James R. Osgood and Company, 1859 / 1874-1875. Two volumes have engraved frontispiece portraits. Half calf over marbled boards. Duodecimos. Volumes are very good with a few slight extremity rubs. The volume with the letter has had the front hinge expertly strengthened with Japanese tissue. The letter has a few expertly repaired short splits at folds.

Handsome group of volumes accompanying a nice Emerson letter discussing the practical business of publishing. The nearly 3 page letter is entirely in Emerson's hand, signed, and dated Concord, 3 Nov, 1859 to a Mr. Timmons. Emerson instructs Timmons--who apparently represented Emerson with his publisher, Ticknor & Fields--on drawing up a publishing contract according to terms previously discussed.

The letter is tipped into the volume "Essays: First Series"
