Philadelphia: John E. Potter and Company, [c.1876]. Wood cuts, steel engravings. Original cloth over boards. Octavo. Over 800 pages. Very good. Bound in brown cloth over boards with spine titled in gilt, ornamental designs stamped in black on upper and lower boards, brown endpapers. Minor extremity wear. Front and rear endpapers beginning to split at hinges, though hinges remain sound.

An unusual book canvasser's sample book for the firm of John E. Potter and Company of Philadelphia in the latter 19th century. They showcase 150 books in an array of subjects, from practical works on agriculture and medical remedies to adventure and war stories and popular novels. There are sample pages from each book along with steel engraved and woodcut illustrations specimens from the books that had them.

The book concludes with information on the great variety of Bibles and testaments offered by the firm and several blank order sheets bound in. There is a sample of green binding cloth with gilt and black stamping affixed to each pastedown.
