Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse

London: Jarrolds Publishers, [1912]. Color plates by Cecil Aldin. Black 1/2 leather with black cloth sides. Quarto. viii, 291 pages. Fine, with just a few scattered spots of foxing.

Though generally thought of as a children's book today, Anna Sewell conceived of Black Beauty as an adult novel aimed at cultivating respect and better treatment of working horses. It was her only book, and proved to be one of the most popular animal stories of all time.

This edition is beautifully illustrated with 18 full color plates by noted sporting illustrator Cecil Aldin. Beautifully bound in 1/2 black leather over boards with black cloth sides, five raised bands on spine, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Original green cloth front cover and spine are bound in at rear.
