Item #696 The Fire Next Time. James Baldwin.

The Fire Next Time

New York: The Dial Press, 1963. First edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 122 pages. Very good in a good dust jacket. Bound in coarse buff cloth over boards with burgundy topstain and black endpapers. Shallow chips to jacket at head of spine and top edge of rear panel, some minor extremity rubs, and a few edge tears taped from back side by prior owner.

Important non-fiction title by Baldwin, consisting of two essays on race relations in America. The first, "My Dungeon Shook," is a letter to his nephew on the 100th anniversary of Emancipation, and the second, "Down at the Cross," addresses what Baldwin sees as religion's negative effects on the Black community.

"God gave Noah the rainbow sign,
No more water, the fire next time!"
