A New Dictionary of Quotations on Historical Principles from Ancient and Modern Sources

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1942. First edition. Full cloth. Tall octavo. xiv, 1347 pages. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Bound in dark blue cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine and upper board. Shallow bump on bottom edge of upper board. Mencken's great collection of quotations, begun for his own use in 1918 as worthwhile quotes he did not find in existing quotation references. He eventually began to search out material for his collection, and ultimately added some of the quotes found in other works. He omitted mere platitudes, however, and confined the collection to authors who had something to say and said it to good effect. See ADLER p. 33.
