Roosevelt's second regularly published book (excluding privately printed items). Here TR recounts his time as a Dakota Territory rancher, where he went following the horror of losing his mother and wife on the same day, Valentine's Day, 1884. His subsequent experiences as a rancher and hunter in the Dakota Badlands laid the groundwork for his passion for conservation of animals and habitat.
This is the second state of the first trade edition, identified by the correction on the spine from "Hunting Trip..." to "Hunting Trips..." There were just 1,000 copies printed of this first trade edition, in both states (see Cole p. 22, "Notes").
This copy is in superb condition. Quite uncommon in these early Roosevelt titles.

Bound in deep yellow-orange diagonally patterned cloth over bevelled boards. Title on upper board stamped in red, gilt-stamped on spine, floral-patterned endpapers. Slight extremity rubs and wear, contemporaneous prior owner name on preliminary blank, else fine. In custom clear Mylar jacket and slipcase.
