Declaration of Independence. In Congress, July 4th. 1776. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America

Manchester, NH: Wm. H. Fisk, 1856. Calligraphic text surrounding a full length portrait of George Washington. Single sheet, approximately 23" x 28"

Gilman R. Russell, a professor of penmanship, designed and executed the original of this work entirely with a pen. Gilman's calligraphic text of the Declaration surrounds a lithographed portrait of Washington, who stands with sword in hand as if ready to defend it with force. The whole is surrounded by an ornamental border of grape vines, with an eagle centered at the top.

Uncommon, with OCLC locating just 3 copies.

Ref. BIDWELL 59, variant I.

Mild age toning to the paper. There is a 6" closed tear at top center, a couple of short edge tears, and a few patches of surface abrasion. Overall a very attractive example of this scarce Declaration.
