Colorfully illustrated retelling of an old Hawaiian legend of courage, destiny, and transformation. The story follows young Umi, a commoner whose curiosity and quest for adventure lead him into forbidden places--and ultimately toward his royal heritage.
Eskeridge was an ethnographer and artist who taught at the University of Hawaii in the 1930s. He painted murals for the WPA during the Depression which are on display in Honolulu and Chicago.
Scarce, especially in the dust jacket.
Bound in turquoise cloth over boards with upper board stamped in red, black, and gilt, and spine titled in gilt, illustrated endpapers. Dust jacket has edge chips, mild rubs, and a few short closed edge tears. There is a 3/4" x 1 1/2" hole in jacket along front fore edge fold, and a patch of spotting toward top fore corner of front panel.
