Golf and Golfing: A Practical Manual [Golf in America]

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1895. Retitled Second Edition of "Golf in America" Original cloth over boards. Sixteenmo. [i-iii], iv, [v], vi, [5]-194 pages.

A landmark golf book whose first edition, published earlier the same year (1895) under the title 'Golf in America,' was the first book on the sport to be published in the United States. The United States Golf Association had officially organized just months earlier, recognizing golf as an established American sport.

Includes chapters on the origin and history of the sport, its introduction into the United States, explanation of the rules and techniques of the game, etiquette of golf, a glossary, lists of leading clubs in the U.S. and Canada, and the constitution and by-laws of the USGA at the time.

Scarce. OCLC locates just 3 copies of this edition.

Ref. DONOVAN & MURDOCH 3360; WEXLER p. 13.
