America's Greatest Book Dealer on 'Moby Dick' Before it Became a Classic. Inscribed to a Survivor of the Titanic

An Introduction to Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, or, The Whale [1851] (Signed)

New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1924. Limited Edition, #206 of 250 copies. Hardcover. Octavo. [ii], 9 pages.

A thoughtful, sincere, and well written essay on Melville's greatest book by America's greatest rare book dealer. Rosenbach was a pioneer in the early 20th century revival of interest in 'Moby Dick,' having recently acquired Nathaniel Hawthorne's copy, inscribed to Hawthorne by Melville himself.

This lovely edition was printed by John Henry Nash of San Francisco in an edition of just 250 copies. This copy is inscribed and signed by Rosenbach in the month of publication to Virginia book collector, banker, and Titanic survivor Robert W. Daniel thusly: "Mr. Robert W. Daniel, / with Christmas greetings / from / A. S. W. Rosenbach / December 1924"

Very good. Bound in brown paper over boards with original printed title label to spine. Minor rubs to extremities, small spot to lower fore corner of upper board, a few shallow extremity bumps. Lacking original slipcase but in custom-cut Mylar jacket.
