Melville's collection of Civil War poetry dedicated "to the memory of the three hundred thousand who in the war for the maintenance of the Union fell devotedly under the flag of their fathers." Includes a section of Notes and a Supplement which Melville felt compelled to include in contemplating how the country might be put back together.

Copyright notice with the requisite misspelling "hnndred" for "hundred."

19th century binding of marbled paper over boards with leather spine and fore corners, marbled endpapers, all edges of textblock marbled. Gilt-stamped titles on black leather spine label. Mild rubs to extremities and joints. Binding sound. A lovely and pleasingly patinated copy of this uncommon Melville item.
