Blood Meridian, Or the Evening Redness in the West
New York: Random House, (1985). First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 337 pages.
McCarthy's masterpiece. Set in the American Southwest between 1849-1850 and based heavily on Samuel Chamberlain's memoir, 'My Confession,' this was McCarthy's only historical novel. Spectacularly written, he brings some unforgettable characters to life--including the landscape itself. Judge Holden is a freak of pure evil, violence, and intelligence, whose discourses on the human condition the reader wishes to counter, but ultimately cannot. He is surely one of the greatest villains in literature.
Critics have come to acknowledge 'Blood Meridian' as one of the greatest American novels to date, and it seems likely to retain that status.
Very good in a very good dust jacket. A beautiful copy. There are a couple of tiny bumps at board fore edges and about mid-upper joint. No prior ownership marks. Also free of the remainder mark found on the majority of copies.
