Growing Up Black: Photographs by LeRoy Lucas

[New York]: New York State Council on the Arts, [1971]. Black and white photographs. [4] page leaflet and 50 plates in slipcase. Folio.

A portfolio of 50 striking black and white photographic prints of Harlem and African American life in New York in the 1960s.

"What I'm trying to do in this 'Growing Up Black' portfolio of photographs is to represent my feeling and view of what growing up black can mean in expression, design, composition in the direction of the artist, the creator, and hope that those who have these pictures, these photographs at their disposal, can acquire some insight, intellect and creativity. Whether it be photography as an art form or photography as a means of furthering the betterment of the human condition." -- from Lucas's Introductory Statement.

Near fine in a very good slipcase. The 50 loose plates are free of wear, with occasional faint age toning at extreme edges. The bi-fold printed introductory comments by Lucas is shows a 1/2" line of sun-fading along fore edge, likely where it protruded from slipcase for an extended period of time. The slipcase has a few minor extremity rubs, a bit of cracking to paper along fore edge joint, and an ink squiggle above Lucas's name on title panel.
