The United States in the Light of Prophecy; Or, an Exposition of Rev. 13:11-17
Battle Creek: Steam Press of the Seventh-Day Adventist Publishing Association, 1872. First Edition. Original cloth over boards. Duodecimo. [i-v], vi, [vii], viii, [9], 10-160 pages plus 4 pages of publisher ads.
Seventh-Day Adventist pioneer Uriah Smith’s treatise on Revelation 13:11–18, in which the “two‑horned beast” is read as the United States. The two lamb‑like horns are interpreted as civil and religious liberty, but its dragon voice is a warning of coercive power to come.
A foundational text in Seventh‑day Adventist prophetic theology which established the denomination's enduring interpretation of the United States as prophetic actor in the apocalyptic last days.
Issued anonymously in this first printing, with the Preface signed in type by Smith simply as “U.S.” This copy has an old presentation plate from the Seventh-Day Adventist Tract Society of New England, listing the organization's officers, etc.
Bound brown cloth over boards with spine title blocked in gilt, both boards titled and ornamented in blind. Near fine overall, with just a few extremity rubs and shallow chips at head of spine, old catalogue number penned on front free endpaper, and faint scattered foxing inside. Binding sound.
