A Theory of the Universe
New York: P. S. Wynkoop & Son Publishers, 1868. First Edition. Cloth over boards. Octavo. [i-iii], iv-v, [vi-vii], viii, [9], 10-91 pages.
Fascinating theory of matter and the universe in which gaseous matter is expelled by the sun, condenses into liquid in space, forms comets with tails which are drawn into orbits around the sun, the comets eventually condense into solid planets and form orbits that inch ever closer to the sun, the cycle finally renewing itself when a planet and its matter are finally drawn back into the inferno and turned into gaseous matter once again.
The nature of matter and the forces acting upon it are studied here, along with deductions from observations in geology, chemistry, and astronomy in examining the present theory.
The anonymous author, believed to be one Samuel Hutchins, bases his essay on scientific works of the day, but concludes with the observation that the predicted end of planet Earth by this scientific theory is consistent with the Biblical prophecy of a fiery end for the planet.
