Mrs. Davis was an astute observer and participant in Confederate society and here captures portraits of leaders, recalls events, and documents the waning spirit in the Confederacy as the war dragged on.

Two thick volumes bound in gray cloth over boards with black-stamped borders and ornamentation on upper boards, gilt-stamped titles and black-stamped rules on spines, floral patterned endpapers. Minor rubs and shallow bumps to binding extremities. Hinges sound. Old bookseller label at bottom fore corner of front pastedown in volume I. Near fine overall.
