Landmark 19th Century American Socialist Utopian Novel

Looking Backward, 2000-1887

Cleveland and New York: The World Publishing Company, (1945). Limited edition, #354 of 950 copies. Decorative chapter heads by George Salter. Hardcover. Octavo. 311 pages.

An elegant, limited edition of this influential socialist utopian novel which was originally published in 1888. The story centers on a Boston aristocrat who falls into a hypnotic sleep and awakens in the year 2000 to find society transformed into a fully nationalized, socialist utopia.

Bellamy's book quickly became a bestseller upon publication, and was cited by many later radical thinkers in America as the book that first spurred them to social consciousness. This is an important counterweight to the notion that all American radical movements stem from the writings of foreign authors.

Introduction by the author's son, Paul Bellamy, reflecting on the continuing relevance of his father's work at the close of World War II.

Ref. RIDEOUT; TAYLOR; etc.

Near fine in a very good slipcase. A hint of fading to spine. Slipcase shows mild wear along joints with a bit of fading and slight chipping around the mouth.
