Hiroshima - Signed Limited Edition
New York: Limited Editions Club, 1983. Edition limited to 1,500 copies, of which this is #102. Silk screens by Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000). Leather over boards, in slipcase. Folio. Unpaginated.
A finely produced edition of John Hersey's impactful account of six survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Originally published in 1946, 'Hiroshima' remains one the most influential works of 20th century documentary prose.
This edition includes a Preface in original verse by Robert Penn Warren and eight haunting color illustrations by noted African American artist, Jacob Lawrence. One cannot miss the significance of the book's design details--the black stained textblock edges, black endpapers, the binding of coal-black aniline cowhide over heavy boards, with the title seared into the very skin at top of the upper board.
The volume is signed by all three contributors--Hersey, Warren, and Lawrence--on colophon at rear. 'The Monthly Letter of The Limited Editions Club' describing this volume in detail is laid in.
Near fine in a near fine slipcase. Book is clean and free of prior ownership marks. Tissue guards over the color plates show some occasional wrinkling. Slipcase shows faint fading along edges. A beautiful copy overall.
