Paul Laurence Dunbar, born in 1872 to freed slaves, was an early influential African American poet, novelist, and playwright. Much of his popular work was written in the Negro dialect of the antebellum South, as this striking book is. Illustrated with photographs by the Hampton Institute Camera Club, with typographical decorations by Margaret Armstrong. A striking book in both form and content.
Very good. Decorative publisher's binding, top edges gilt. Prior owner name gift inscription from 1908 on front free endpaper. Minor extremity rubs, light soiling to endpapers. Hinges sound.
