"Don't you think it wicked to try to steal our country?"

London to Ladysmith via Pretoria

New York: Longman's, Green, and Co., 1900. First American Edition. Frontispiece folding map, additional maps and plans. Cloth over boards. Octavo. xiv, 496 pages.

The first collection of Churchill's dispatches to the Morning Post during the opening months of the Second Boer War. Churchill recounts his capture by Boer forces after the armored train he was aboard was ambushed.

This is the first and only printing of the American first edition, which Cohen believes consisted of less than 2000 copies--far less than the British first edition of some 10000 copies. A dust jacket was presumably issued but Cohen notes none are known to survive.

COHEN A4.2; WOODS A4.

Bound in burgundy pebbled-cloth over boards with upper board ruled in gilt, upper board and spine titled in gilt, top edge gilt. Clean and sound overall, gilt remains bright, minimal rubs to extremities. A fine copy.
