"One cannot see any gaps in the crowd; it is so full of animation that the spaces where Death has put his hand are not to be seen."

Ian Hamilton's March

New York: Longman's, Green, and Co., 1900. First American Edition. Black and white frontispiece, map diagrams. Cloth over boards. Octavo. xiv, 409 pages.

Churchill's firsthand dispatches covering Lt. General Ian Hamilton's flanking column as it marched 400 miles through Boer-held territory from Bloemfontein to Pretoria during the Second Boer War. Fold-out map at rear.

This is the first and only printing of the American first edition, which consisted of just over 1500 copies--far less than the British first edition of some 5000 copies. A dust jacket was presumably issued but Cohen notes none are known.

COHEN A8.2; WOODS A5.

Bound in burgundy pebbled-cloth over boards with upper board ruled in gilt, upper board and spine titled in gilt, top edge gilt. Clean and sound overall, gilt remains bright, minimal rubs to extremities. A near fine copy.
