Riders of the Purple Sage: A Novel
New York: Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers, [c.1922]. Black and white plates by Douglas Duer. Original cloth over boards. Octavo. [vi], 335 pages, [8 ads].
A beautiful copy of the Grosset & Dunlap reprint of Zane Grey's best-known novel in the scarce pictorial dust jacket by Duer. Originally published in 1912 by Harper & Brothers, this edition dates to circa 1922 based on titles listed on reverse of the dust jacket.
Grey's 'Riders of the Purple Sage' crystallized the core elements of the Western novel--rugged individualism, moral frontier justice, and mythic landscapes--building on the foundation laid by Owen Wister in 'The Virginian.'.
Bound in gray cloth over boards with pictorial onlay to upper board, purple border rules and titles to upper board, purple titles to spine. Shallow bumps to spine ends and a few light scratches to upper board only, else fine. Jacket has a bit of scuffing to front panel, a 1/2" edge tear at bottom middle of front panel, and other minor edge wear. A remarkably clean and fresh copy of this classic in the increasingly elusive dust jacket.
