Abraham Lincoln
London: Constable & Company Ltd, 1916. First Edition. Black and white tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of beardless Lincoln. Cloth over boards. viii, 479 pages.
Uncommon first edition of Lord Charnwood's bestselling Lincoln biography. This was the first significant attempt by an Englishman to portray Lincoln, and as such this biography benefits greatly from Charnwood's inclusion of many details of American history and the American political system intended to clarify the story for a British audience. Goes beyond the facts to explore the major decisions and acts of Lincoln's presidency and the controversies that surrounded almost every one of them. Remains a valuable contribution to the study of Lincoln.
Published as a volume in the 'Makers of the Nineteenth Century' series edited by Basil Williams. This biography was published in the United States in 1917 and went through many printings in both countries, but first editions are quite uncommon--particularly this original British one.
Ref. MONAGHAN 2229; ANGLE pp. 42-44.
Very good. Bound in red cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine titles and blind stamped border rules to both boards. Fore and bottom edges of texblock untrimmed. Minor extremity wear, light foxing to endpapers and a few beginning and ending leaves. Some leaves unopened. A touch of fading to spine. Hinges sound. A handsome copy overall.
