The Photographic History of the Civil War In Ten Volumes

New York: The Review of Reviews Co., 1911. First Edition. Black and white photographs, maps. Cloth over boards. Quartos. Nearly 3,500 pages in all.

Published just 50 years after the start of the Civil War, this mammoth work remains the most important source for photographs of the war. It contains some 3,389 images including the greatest single assemblage of Brady photographs. Also contains excellent written contributions from soldiers and historians on both sides, as well as a Foreword by President William Howard Taft.

The Civil War was the first to be extensively documented through photography, and these volumes show what it really looked like. The classic iconic images are all here, of course, but so are hundreds of lesser-known photographs. The reproduction quality in these volumes is quite good, while the images in later reprints show significant degradation from being copied from this edition.

This source work is essential to any Civil War collection, and this set is in better condition than usually encountered.

Ref. EICHER 771; NEVINS Vol II, p. 22.

Bound in blue cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine titles and rules, blind-embossed emblem to upper boards, decorative endpapers, and top edges gilt. Volume I has a bump to head of spine at top of lower joint with a little bit of fraying to cloth, as well as moderate bowing to boards. The remaining volumes show little wear apart from a few surface scuffs and shallow bumps at extremities. Hinges sound. A well-preserved set, very good to near fine overall.
