The Wreck of the Titan: Or, Futility (Signed)
[New York]: McClure's Magazine, (1912). Full cloth. Octavo. [vi], 243 pages.
A signed copy of the well-known but scarce novel that foreshadowed the tragedy of the Titanic.
Morgan Robertston's novel, "Futility," was originally published in 1898, and tells the story of a gigantic, "unsinkable" luxury liner called the Titan. As she speeds recklessly across the North Atlantic on her maiden voyage, in April, she strikes an iceberg and sinks. The fictional Titan carries too few lifeboats for the number of passengers aboard, resulting in a tragic loss of life.
Robertson's book was reprinted in 1912, when the Titanic disaster made its original appearance 14 years earlier seem eerily prophetic.
This copy is from the "Autograph Edition" and is signed by Robertson on a printed sentiment laid onto preliminary blank leaf.
Bound in brick red cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine lettering. Binding shows mild fading to and a slight lean to spine. Very good overall. Presents well in custom 4 mil Mylar cover.
