Copy #2 of a Trollope Limited Edition with Lengthy Inscription from A. Edward Newton to his Wife

The American Senator

New York: Random House, (1940). Limited Edition, copy #2 of 310. Hardcover. Octavo. xvii, [1], 561 pages.

This Trollope novel blends social satire and romantic drama as he makes candid critiques of England's fox‑hunting, class distinctions, and rural customs through his character Senator Elias Gotobed, an American visitor to the rural English countryside.

This is copy #2 of the edition, for which noted early 20th century bibliophile and early Trollope collector, A. Edward Newton, wrote the Prolegomenon. There is a lengthy inscription on the front free endpaper from Newton to his wife:
---
"Babette E. Newton -
This is copy No. 2. Where No. 1 is I don't know but this I know-- that the prolegomenon is my Swan Song and like 'The Amenities' is dedicated to you.
A. Edward Newton,
April 15, 1940
---

Newton was a founder and early champion of the Trollope Society, reviving interest in the author's novels in the early 20th century.

Bound in brown cloth over boards with burgundy cloth spine, top edge gilt with gilt borders on both boards, spine titled in gilt. Without dust jacket, as issued. There is an old newspaper clipping related to Newton and his Trollope interest pasted to front pastedown, with mild browning offset to front free endpaper. Otherwise no significant wear to book. Housed in a black paper covered slipcase with some rubs and chipping around opening. Overall near fine in a very good slipcase.
