Tales
Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930. First edition thus, limited to 1,000 copies. Illustrated by W. A. Dwiggins. Hardcover in publisher's slipcase. Duodecimo. [vi], 495 pages.
A very handsome edition of 22 tales, illustrated throughout by W. A. Dwiggins, who also designed the book under the supervision of legendary typographer William A. Kittredge.
This fine edition of Poe's Tales comes from the Lakeside Press's "Four American Books" project in 1930. Lakeside was the fine press division of the R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company of Chicago, and this project was designed to demonstrate their ability to execute fine printing on par with European presses. The other three American books in the series were "Two Years Before the Mast," "Walden," and "Moby Dick."
A very nice copy of this landmark in 20th century typography, in original red velvet-lined slipcase.
