Rich narrative of Mills' youth in Texas, military service in the Civil War, Indian campaigns on the Western frontier, and various experiences and observations on life in late 19th and early 20th century America. Much on Mills' service at Fort Grant, Arizona Territory and Fort Bridger, as well as with Crook's campaign against the Sioux in 1876.
This copy is inscribed and signed by Mills to H. W. Dorsey. Well illustrated with photographs and a few maps.

Bound in black cloth over thin boards with gilt-stamped titling on upper board, gilt border rules on both boards, and black endpapers. Some light rubs to exterior. Interior clean and binding sound. Gilt remains sharp and bright.
