A Problem in Modern Ethics; Being an Inquiry into the Phenomenon of Sexual Inversion. Addressed Especially to Medical Psychologists and Jurists
London: (S.n.), 1896. Second pirated edition, #33 of 100 copies. Cloth over boards. Octavo. viii, 135 pages.
Originally published in a tightly controlled edition of just 50 copies in 1891, this work contained the first print appearance of the word "homosexual" in English. The present copy is from an edition printed without Symonds' authorization five years later.
Symonds presents a sympathetic consideration of homosexuality in the last years of the 19th century and argues against the criminalization of any consensual sexual practices. Though married and the father of four daughters, Symonds privately maintained homosexual relationships throughout his life and his work and is known to have influenced Oscar Wilde.
Near fine. A few minor extremity rubs.
