The first American edition of these sweeping 17th century works by John Smith. The first volume recounts Smith's adventures across other continents before covering his arrival in America, and contains the first three Books of his "The Generall Historie of Virgnia." The second volume continues Smith's account of the British colonization of America, containing the remainder of his history of Virginia, New England, and Bermuda. Considerable coverage of Pocahontas.
All three of the large foldout sheets are present and in very good condition. One of these sheets shows nine scenes of Smith's adventures on other continents. There is a sheet showing scenes in Virginia, primarily Smith's interactions with the indigenous peoples and including the scene of Pocahontas saving his life from her father. Said sheet also includes a small map of "Ould Virginia." Finally, the third foldout sheet is a large map of Virginia showing the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries to the west. Each volume also includes an engraved frontispiece.
A very nice set of this important work with all of its illustrations intact and in very good condition..
