The Barber's Shop

Manchester / London: Abel Heywood & Son / Simpkin, Marshall & Co., 1883. Illustrated by William Morton. Original cloth over boards. Quarto. xxxii, 250 pages.

Procter, himself a professional barber and hair stylist, here humorously explores the cultural significance of barbershops, highlighting their role as lively social hubs filled with conversation, history, and amusing anecdotes.

Procter was working on this revised and enlarged edition of the tonsorial tome he had originally published in 1856. Nicely illustrated throughout.

Bound in olive green cloth over boards with bevelled edges. Spine and upper board decorated in black and gilt, with gilt spine titles, top edge gilt, and dark gray coated endpapers. Minor extremity rubs and shallow fraying. Hinges remain sound. Some minor scattered soil or finger marks in text. Very good to near fine overall.
