Nash Buckingham's First Book, with Lengthy Inscription

De Shootinest Gent'man and Other Tales (Signed)

New York: The Derrydale Press, (1934). First Edition, number 698 of 950 copies. Black and white photographic illustrations. Full leather over boards. Octavo. [xvi], 240 pages.

The first edition of Buckingham's first book with a lengthy inscription signed by him on preliminary blank leaf. Most of the inscription is a quote from the oldest English-language book on hunting, "Master of Game," circa 1406. Following this 14-line transcription, Buckingham has added his own sentiment, "And by the like, I'm wishing you / many a happy day afield / Nash Buckingham / 1934".

The stories featured here relate to hunting upland birds with the shotgun, and are introduced by Col. Harold P. Sheldon. The stories had previously appeared in national sporting magazines of the day.

Ref. SIEGEL 76; HAND B649.

Rebound in full emerald leather over boards with gilt-stamped spine titles and ornaments in compartments between 4 raised bands, gilt border rules to both boards, marbled endpapers. Interior leaves mildly toned, a bit of separation between new and old preliminary blank leaves, a tissue-reinforced crease to lower fore edge of blank leaf, which also bears a neat prior ownership name dated "Xmas 1934." Very good overall.
