Atomic Energy for Military Purposes: The Official Report on the Development of the Atomic Bomb under the Auspices of the United States Government, 1940-1945
Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1945. First Edition. Black and white photographic plates. Original cloth over boards. Octavo. [xii], 264 pages.
This is the first published appearance of the Smyth Report, following very small mimeograph and lithoprint versions circulated internally for corrections and additions. This Princeton University edition precedes by a week or two the Government Printing Office edition in plain brown printed covers. See "The 'Smyth Report': a Descriptive Check List," prepared by Earle E. Coleman.
Includes a section of black and white photographs showing the Manhattan Project's plants at Oak Ridge, TN and Hanford, WA as well as a series of four images of the first atomic bomb test in New Mexico.
Historically significant report on the harnessing of nuclear power, and a remarkable account compiled by those involved.
