Herndon's Lincoln: the True Story of a Great Life. Etiam in minimis major. The History and Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln by William H. Herndon, for Twenty Years His Friend and Law Partner
Springfield: The Herndon's Lincoln Publishing Company, (1921). Cloth hardcovers. Duodecimos. Over 650 pages.
Herndon's biography of his law partner portrays Lincoln as an ordinary man rather than the epic hero often found in other biographies. Here is "the subjective Lincoln…his passions, appetites…perceptions…just as he lived, breathed, ate, and laughed." For this reason, particularly as it manifests itself in the account of Lincoln's romance with Ann Rutledge, Herndon's biography was very controversial when originally released in 1889.
An essential item for any serious Lincoln collection.
