The Old Man and the Sea

London: Jonathan Cape, (1952). First British Edition. Octavo. Cloth over boards.

The fine piece of writing that finally won Hemingway a major literary prize--the Pulitzer in 1953. This title was specifically mentioned by Swedish Academy in awarding Hemingway the Nobel Prize in Literature the following year.

The first British edition, with the striking dust jacket art by Hans Tisdall. Copies in collectable condition are getting tougher to find.

Ref. HANNEMAN A45A.

Very good in a very good dust jacket. Upper and lower boards show thin line of slight sun fade at top and bottom of board edges. Neat prior owner inscription on front free endpaper dated 1952. Jacket has a few shallow edge chips, a short, closed tear at top of upper joint fold, and a few tiny rubs. Jacket is clean and bright overall, with considerably less browning to the spine than usually found. Overall a very handsome and bright copy of this stunning first edition.
