Civil War unit history of the 9th New York Volunteer Regiment, commanded by Rush C. Hawkins. This regiment participated in the first major land battle of the war at Big Bethel, Virginia. Included here is a Confederate soldiers' account of the killing of Col. Theodore Winthrop, one of the first Union officers killed in the war. Hawkins' Zouaves played a role in other important battles, including South Mills, Roanoke Island, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and the siege of Suffolk.
This copy has an autograph note tipped in from a 1st Lieutenant in the regiment, James B. Horner, reading:
"To my friend and comrade / James K. Penfield / with the compliments / of / James B. Horner / 17th September 1907 / 45th anniversary of the / Battle of Antietam." A tangible connection to the events related in this history.
The volume includes the complete muster-out roll for the unit.

Bound in yellow cloth over boards with spine and upper board titled in gilt, upper board illustration of a uniformed Zouave in three colors. Top edge gilt. Minor extremity wear, spine mildly browned, light foxing to endpapers, slight stain to title page, else clean and bright inside. Very good to near fine overall.
