Life on the Mississippi (Signed by Benton)
New York: Limited Editions Club, 1944. Limited Edition, #174 of 1,200 copies. Illustrated by Thomas Hart Benton. Illustrated paper over boards with leather spine, in publisher's cloth clamshell box. Quarto. xxviii, 418, [3] pages.
Captures the essence of Twain's youthful days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi, offering a rich tapestry of humor, nostalgia, and keen observations on the changing American society alongside the ever-evolving Mississippi River. This edition includes a number of previously suppressed passages. The whole is evocatively illustrated by Thomas Hart Benton, and signed by him at the colophon page. A lovely copy, not often found in this condition.
Book is nearly pristine, with original glassine jacket showing mild browning and a few small edge chips. Clamshell box shows some edge fading, minor edge rubs, and some deterioration of the title label on spine.
