The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)
London: Chatto & Windus, 1888. Early U.K. Edition. With 174 illustrations. Original cloth over boards. Octavo. xvi, 438, 32 (ads) pages.
Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" is a cornerstone of American literature, and was groundbreaking in its use of vernacular dialogue and its bold critique of societal norms and racial injustices. Its impact on narrative style and its influence on the trajectory of American writing are unparalleled. Hemingway famously said of this masterpiece, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.”
This is an early printing of the first British edition of one of the most important books in American literature, handsomely bound in decorated red cloth and patterned endpapers. The first British printing was in 1884, preceding the 1885 first American printing.

Shallow bumps to spine ends, a bit of sun fading to spine, else fine. A lovely copy.
