The Paris Commune, 1871

London: Sidgwick & Jackson, (1971). First Edition thus. Hardcover. Octavo. xii, 139 pages.

A collection of Marx's work relating to the Paris Commune of 1871, which was a radical socialist and revolutionary government that briefly ruled Paris from March to May, 1871. The Commune was ultimately crushed by the forces of the French Third Republic, but it opened a new era of revolutionary thought and upheaval in Europe.

This collection includes Marx's addresses to the International Working Men's Association, his two manifestoes on the Franco-Prussian War, and his essay on the Civil War in France.

Christopher Hitchens's 30 page Introduction to this collection is his first book appearance. Hitchens would go on to give us some of the most provocative books and articles on religion and politics, but here he was just a young radical recent graduate of Balliol College, Oxford.

This is a review copy, with publisher's slip laid in. Quite scarce in commerce.
