Roots
Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1976. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. viii, [2], 1-587 pages.
Monumental two-century saga of Haley's enslaved ancestor, Kunta Kinte, and the six generations who came after him in America. Highlights the profound impact of slavery on American history and the enduring strength of family ties.
Kunta Kinte was brought ashore in Annapolis from the ship Lord Ligonier on September 29, 1767 and sold to a Virginia planter. Two hundred years later, to the day, Alex Haley stood on the dock at Annapolis where his ancestor had disembarked as a slave. Today, Annapolis commemorates this history with the Kunta Kinte-Alex Haley Memorial, honoring the legacy and cultural impact of Haley's work.
Its publication in 1976 ignited a national conversation about race, identity, and ancestry. The book not only became a bestseller but also inspired a hugely popular television miniseries in 1977, watched by millions of viewers.
