The Struggle for the World
New York: The John Day Company, Inc., (1947). First Edition. Publisher's cloth over boards. Octavo. [viii], 248 pages.
This insightful and important book was the first to identify the Cold War. Burnham's opening sentences describe the relatively minor revolt of Greek sailors and soldiers against the British at Alexandria in April, 1944. He calls this incident the start of the "Third World War."
The mutiny was led by elements of the Greek Communist Party, which were ultimately led by the Soviet Union. Pointing out that the Soviet Union and the British Empire were then allies in World War II, Burnham cites this clash at Alexandria and the subsequent short, bitter civil war in Greece as the beginning of a different war--ultimately known as the "Cold War." .
This fascinating book grew out of a secret study Burnham prepared for the OSS in the spring of 1944, analyzing the post-war intentions of the Soviet Union.
Very good in a good dust jacket. Minor extremity wear and areas of light fading to boards. Jacket has sun fading to spine, edge chips, a few closed edge tears, and mild soiling.
