New York: George F. Nesbitt & Co., Printers and Stationers, 1860. Pamphlet. Octavo. 32 pages.

An early printing of Abraham Lincoln's Cooper Union speech--arguably his greatest oration. This is the speech--delivered to a tough and skeptical New York audience--that instantly transformed Lincoln from a frontier politician with a vague reputation as a decent stump speaker and debater into a viable Presidential candidate for the national Republican Party.

In it he makes a brilliant argument that a majority of the nation's founders intended that slavery not be allowed to expand into new territories as the country grew. The research he had to conduct on their voting records and documented comments is impressive, even before you recall that he did it from basically the frontier. His logic and reasoning are stunning.

An uncommon, important, and tangible artifact from Lincoln's first campaign for President of the United States.
